Most surf music of the early 60's was played on medium flatwound strings. Dick Dale says he used heavy strings but I don't know if they were flatwounds. Leo Fender designed the Jazzmaster for Jazz players and flatwounds were very popular until the late 60's.

One of the enduring qualities of surf music is the simplicity of getting some of the basic sounds. An minor chord, some reverb and a whammy bar are such a fine combination.

If you listen to the Ventures and some other early surf bands you may notice that their use of reverb is fairly conservative. A tube driven long spring reverb unit is a bit much at 10. I'm so glad the Romanians like surf music.

I drove a '65 Galaxie 500 convertible around socal for years. If this guitar channels any of the "surf" soul that car had, its a must buy.

Where can I play one in NorCal?

Like the surf music top 20. Judging from the tunes, it appears that the rule is instrumental. That being the case, I would add "Moon Dawg" and "Point Panic." Was pleased with the revisionist efforts of The Surfaris "Basic Tracks" about 5 years ago. Though skillful, the drumming was a bit heavy and also a tad anachronistic. Glad that they did the disc, as they respected the sanctity of clear guitar sounds. It looks as if surf music is going global now. Glad to see it for the greater glory of the genre. Long live surf music!
